Elena Chen

Elena Chen is a photographer and visual artist working across fashion, editorial photography, commissioned image-making, and self-directed projects. Moving between constructed and observational approaches, she uses photography to examine how people are shaped by the roles, expectations, and environments around them.

Her personal work often begins with the body — not as a fixed subject, but as a site where adaptation becomes visible. She is interested in restraint, performance, adaptation, and transformation, and in the ways these conditions are expressed through gesture, posture, objects, and landscape. Her images often hold a tension between beauty and unease, control and vulnerability.

Across commissioned and personal projects, Chen is drawn to the process of constructing images and to the moments when that construction becomes visible. Through the deliberate arrangement of bodies, clothing, objects, light, and space, she explores how identities are performed and negotiated, while remaining attentive to ambiguity and what escapes control.
